iPad saves the Page Advertising Business
Share |

iPad saves the Page Advertising BusinessI was just reading BtoB Magazine’s latest issue and an article called Publishers pin hopes on iPad caught my attention enough to blog about it. According to the article Jason Snell the editor of IDG’s Macworld – is building an iPad application for his magazine with the promise of a digital version of his magazine on the iPad.

What’s really interesting about this is idea is – could it save the Page Advertising business and Magazine industry which has been in a long steady decline?

Answer – Yes I think it could!

The numbers coming in about the iPad is already staggering (The iPad already has sold over 500000 units since it went on sale April 3) without what some would consider being key features (no camera, no phone, no flash, no multi-tasking etc)

But what Jason sees is a device with a vertical orientation like the print magazine, a much more elegant design than the Kindle, and most importantly with the interactivity of the web. So as a publisher I would be gearing up my sales force to sell rich media page advertising on the iPad.

Totally awesome concept – as an advertiser I finally have the option to have a page ad that actually clicks through to my website directly and that can be totally tracked like all my other media, digitally!

The future of the iPad for as an advertising medium via any publisher is an outstanding idea. Right now we can barely imagine the possibilities of this medium but the promise could really revolutionize the Page advertisement which is long overdue for some innovation.

    How NOT to Help Haiti
    Share |

I’m getting tons of tweet requests to help Haiti by retweeting things. This is, in and of itself, okay.

What needs to happen, however, is that we have to be specific and point to details, and we have to give people the right kind of information to be helpful. For instance, look at Chris Messina’s post on designing hashtags for emergency response. This is useful.

Other ways? Point to blog posts or other websites that have the further detail.

Other ways? Point to charities that you are confident are helpful. For instance, I support Skip1, because I know Shelene Bryan, and know how she manages the money she receives.

But how NOT to help is to just throw out “supportive” tweets that don’t get us to take an action of some kind. Why? Because it will clutter the stream, and people will tune out of the detail.

Twitter and other social tools really help causes. We just have to wire them tightly.

Ben & Jerry's Drops Email Marketing In Favor of Social Media
    Share |

benjerrys.jpgBen & Jerry's Ice Cream of Vermont announced in an email to their subscribers last week that they will be discontinuing their regular email marketing campaigns, in favor of social media. This was a major surprise - Usually, I think of social media and email marketing as having a close relationship and that they are most effective when used together. However, Ben & Jerry's clearly feels otherwise and that their customers prefer contact through social media sites to email in their inbox. In their last email message, they invited their subscribers to connect with them via their Facebook or Twitter accounts, and this would be the last email they would receive from the famous ice cream brand.

Since this announcement, internet marketers and marketing blogs have been buzzing with the news. This is the first major corporation to completely discontinue email marketing, a mainstay of internet marketing since the 90's, for other internet channels. Ben & Jerry's customers had indicated that they disliked the email despite loving the brand, which means that it wasn't building the positive relationship that the famously brand-conscious ice cream company wanted.

Why is this working for them so well? Their presence in social media was already well established, and their fans wanted to continue the connection beyond the email. Their Facebook and Twitter profiles are already delivering tremendous value to them, and so it was easy for them to expand the energy behind those accounts. Their Facebook Page has over 1.3 million fans as of the time of writing, and they maintain several Twitter profiles (Such as [...]
